Agricultural Sector New Wage Rates 1 March 2009
Wage rates have been increased with almost 12.1% and the Department of Labour have done away with differentiation in areas. All farm workers should now earn at least R6.31 per hour. (Download the new scales for full information)
Some employers have indicated that the current South African Financial Climate and the impact on Farmers makes these wage rates unattainable. Trade Unions and employees alike are happy that the CPIX is being used to determine annual increases.
For Farmers that are facing retrenchment with these new rates, the Department of Labour has an exemption application available, where employers are required to submit financial statements as proof of the financial state of the farm and farmers must comply to list of criteria to have a successful exemption application. The Department will not unreasonably withold exemption if the situation threatens the loss of more jobs in South Africa.
Other Farmers are in the position to easily accommodate the increases and are even paying their employees in excess of the minimum wage. Lets hope and be positive that all farmers will eventually be in the position to pay these wages with ease.
